The foil pack crinkles the way they all do, taped to the front of the magazine at a slight angle, a flat rectangle of printed plastic with a star-spangled figure on the front. Peel it away, tip it out, and eight pieces land on the table. One of them is round, red, white and blue, and it is the reason most people picked this issue up in the first place.

LEGO Super Hero Legends magazine issue 12 is the Captain America edition of the Avengers run — LEGO set 242212 — and on the surface it looks like the most predictable covermount the title could have chosen. Look a little closer, though, and it is one of the more quietly useful issues from the line's 2022 stretch.

Flipping Through the Pages

Before the pack, the paper. The magazine follows the format Immediate Media has kept consistent under this banner, aimed at readers from about six upwards: an original Avengers comic story, character profile spreads, a pull-out poster, and several pages of puzzles, mazes and activity challenges. The build instructions for the covermount sit inside too, and on secondhand copies that is often the first page to go missing.

The back page matters more than it looks. Like every edition in this run, issue 12 closes with a preview of the next covermount, which is how regular buyers hear about upcoming figures weeks before retailers list them. If you are handing the issue to a child, it is worth taking a photo of that page first.

What Comes Out of the Foil

The pack is small: one minifigure, eight pieces, designed by Justin Ramsden, the same designer credited on the Iron Man and Loki packs that came before it. Cap's signature Vibranium shield is the headline accessory, and Brickset's catalogue tags for the set also point to a Tesseract reference, which ties the pack to the wider Avengers story rather than to one specific film scene.

The detail collectors should notice is that Brickset lists the minifigure in 242212 as unique to this set. Captain America has appeared in LEGO form many times, so it is easy to assume any Cap is interchangeable with any other. This one isn't: if you want every printed variant of the character, this foil pack is the only official source for this version. That changes the question from "do I need another Captain America?" to "do I have this Captain America?", and for a completist the answer is usually no.

Why This Pack Is Harder to Replace Than It Looks

Let's be realistic about scarcity. Captain America isn't rare, and nobody is going to struggle to find a shield-carrying Cap on a shelf somewhere. What's limited is this specific edition. Issue 12 was a 2022 UK newsstand release with one print run: no reprints, no restocks, and no digital edition that comes with the pack. UK specialists that stocked it at the time now show it as out of stock, so the copies still around are mostly ones collectors deliberately put aside.

There's also the numbering trap. The Avengers and Spider-Man editions share the UK exclusive Super Hero Legends banner, but each has its own numbering, and the two alternate on shelves. LEGO Super Hero Legends magazine issue 12 on the Avengers side has nothing to do with issue 12 on the Spider-Man side. Mixing them up is the most common way collectors end up with a duplicate instead of the gap they were trying to fill.

A Practical Buying Tip

When you see this issue listed, check three things before you commit:

  • Set number on the pack. Look for 242212 printed on the foil. It's the fastest way to confirm you're buying the Avengers issue 12 Captain America pack and not another Cap covermount from a different year.
  • Pack still attached. Ask for a photo that shows the foil pack still taped to the cover. A magazine with the pack removed is a different, much less collectible item.
  • Shield present on loose figures. If the seller is offering the figure without the magazine, make sure the shield is included. With only eight pieces, losing the signature accessory takes away most of what makes the pack worth having.

For display, the sealed magazine and the opened figure do different jobs. Plenty of collectors buy two: one kept flat and sealed for the run, and one opened so the unique Cap can go up on the shelf with the rest of the team.

Adding Issue 12 to Your Avengers Shelf

Every edition in this line is a UK-only newsstand release, so collectors outside the UK have two realistic options: an importer, or a subscription that sends each issue as it comes out. Our complete guide to Super Hero Legends magazine explains how the Avengers and Spider-Man numbering works side by side. Current stock and back issues are in the Brickheads LEGO magazines collection, and the rest of the team is in our LEGO Marvel range.

If you're filling in an Avengers run, LEGO Super Hero Legends magazine issue 12 earns its spot for one simple reason: it's the only place this particular Captain America comes from. The character is familiar, but this version isn't available anywhere else, and a complete, sealed copy is easier to find now than it will be a few years from now.
